Elizabeth Fox-Genovese RIP
Deal Hudson
Yesterday, sadly, a great woman passed away. Elizabeth (Betsey) Fox-Genovese will be missed and mourned by many friends and acquaintances across the globe.
Although she taught at Emory, where I earned my Ph.D. in 1979, I didn't get to know her until the mid-90s when I started editing Crisis magazine. The article I asked her to write on her conversion to the Catholic faith is linked below.

She taught women's studies, but without promoting abortion, hatred of men, or faux rights. She suffered for her independence of mind and for her faith. Her husband, Eugene Genovese, himself a distinguished historian, became a Catholic a few years after Betsey, no doubt, in part, through her intercession.
To get an idea of her genius and spirituality, read her treatment of the question of feminism and John Paul II:

Betsey was one of those people with whom you felt lifted up, suddenly transformed into a better and brighter person. She was filled with unfailing wisdom and generosity. But her legacy, as a writer, teacher, and friend, will continue to bear fruit for decades to come.
Mr. Hudson I woun'nt worry about the past you confessed your sins and were forgiven.I have enjoyed everything you have written.I hope
you will continue to expose the wrongs of the Democratic Party & what they stand for. Numerous Catholic's vote for a person not realizing they are voting for a party. As for any bashing about your
past, let them who are without sin
cast the first stone.God Bless You.

I'm so sorry to hear about this, and express my sympathy to Betsy's family and friends. I met Professor Fox-Genovese at a forum at Boston College in 2003 sponsored by Feminists for Life and Americans United for Life. She was a most remarkable woman who will be sorely missed.

This is incredibly sad. I just reread one of her books in October and had written to her. Professor Fox-Genovese's work greatly impacted my political and social awareness and her perspectives on feminism were greatly needed. Thank you for passing on the word.
