Mary, the True Feminist

Craig Richardson

Marjorie, outstanding comment on the two Edwards presidential campaign workers forced to resign for their anti-Catholic, anti-Christian ugliness.  While these two women were clearly selective in hand picking the worst of the e-mails they received, I too was horrified by the level of hatred put forth by those who purport to defend the Church and the pro-life cause.  This type of behavior is clearly contrary to the teachings of Christ and cannot be justified under any circumstance.

I find it ironic as these two women left their post on the campaign to continue "defending the rights of women," whatever that means, Pope Benedict XVI dedicated his Wednesday public audience to highlighting the essential role women have played in Church history.  These great contributors to Christianity didn't view their femininity and ability to rear children as a curse but people who God had handpicked for a unique and saving role for humanity.

According to the Vatican Information Service (VIS), the Pope today said: "The history of Christianity would have developed quite differently without the generous contribution of many women"...and he recalled how John Paul II had written: "The Church gives thanks for each and every woman ... for all the manifestations of the feminine 'genius'."  The Supreme Pontiff also singled out the Blessed Virgin for her unique role in our salvation: [T]he Virgin Mary, who with her faith and her maternal care worked in a unique way for our redemption. ... Having become a disciple of her Son, ... she followed Him even to the foot of the cross where she received a maternal mission for all his disciples in all times.

I actually feel sorry for Amanda and Melissa.  They will never realize their true femininity and its awesome power if they continue to be mired in this failed and dying philosophy of radical feminism that has trapped so many women of my generation.  As the Virgin Mary so beautifully demonstrated, being truly feminine doesn't mean being subservient to anyone except for almighty God.  And it is in this unwavering faith in the Lord and participating in His providence where true happiness is found.

The Church, so it seems to me, has chronicly failed to express that appreciation in any meaningful way.

Opposing oral contraception, forcing a woman to be subservient to the procreative desires not even of her husband, but of ... the Pope?

Opposing condoms amidst an AIDS crisis that has killed 25 million human beings (Many of them, oddly enough, women)?

Failure to admit women to the thinning ranks of the priesthood?

In other words, women who are properly subordinate are welcomed and "appreciated".

But they are not permitted to make choices about their bodies nor about their minds, and are expected to stay silent about it.

I am outside the church for a number of reasons, these among them. But even when I was a good Catholic kid I never believed in a god who'd settle for unequal treatment for anyone.

It is true that the church would not be where and what it is today without the effort and sacrifice of a great many women. All of whom subordinated themselves to their god.

It seems a pity that the church insists they stay subordinate to dogma as well. Under these strictures, "appreciation" is meaningless.

"Women to thy husbands be subservient, slaves obey thy masters." This was read out at my mother's wedding in 1966. Forty years later the same thinking predominates.

I feel this is a loss to the Church.

So what is more hypocritical > Professing faith in something and then doing the exact opposite or not believing in a doctrine and pointing out what you dislike about it?

And it is in this unwavering faith in the Lord and participating in His providence where true happiness is found.

Or, not.

What works for you doesn't necessarily work for everyone else. There are 100s of varieties of faith. And the world moves on.

For me, there is no faith. Somehow, I get along. Work I enjoy, a happy marriage, tight friends and family, etc.

You need to get over this arrogance of yours.
