Over 110 Bishops Have Spoken Out to Defend Church Teaching In This Election

Among the 110+ bishops who have spoken publicly during this election in defense of Church teaching are 71 ordinaries, i.e., bishops who head dioceses.

That's over one-third of the 197 dioceses and archdioceses in the United States.

There are also 5 cardinals and 12 archbishops on the list.

The regional dispersion is rather even: South 10, Southeast 7, Southwest 11, West 5, Northeast 21, Midwest 29, and Northwest 3.

The "red state, blue state" representation is close to even as well: Red 42, Blue 39.

Here is what looks like the final list for the 2008 election. Thanks to all the readers who offered additions and corrections. (Please let me know if I have left any out.)

"A Catholic Mom in Hawaii" has listed these bishops by states and dioceses.   Thanks Esther!

Comments

Please comment on the Catholic Vote. I cannot stand to hear another comment that the Catholic Vote has been assumed into the general culture or doesn't exist. It clearly does 55% of regular mass attendees voted for McCain and out of the 45% that voted poorly I wonder how many of them have a Bishop that didn't speak out. Looking at the numbers the Catholic vote may be half the size we would like it to be but I'd like to know if that half is at least correlated to the leadership of their Bishop.
